Children’s Theatre

Since the 1940s, the oldest committee within the Junior League of Sacramento has been dedicated to providing a free, live theatre experience for local elementary school children. Committee members, JLS Sustainers, and community members serve as playwrights, actresses, back stage helpers, costume sewers, prop/scenery painters, and logistics coordinators in the quest to produce a quality play. In February and March of 2010, this committee brought the original production of “Rocket, the Runaway Engine” to over 12,000 students from area school districts

Community Partnership
The committee’s primary focus is to maintain the relationship between the JLS and our partner community organizations in the greater Sacramento area. The committee will coordinate the Annual Community Roundtable between the JLS Board of Directors, the JLS Community Advisory Board, and other community organizations; solicit and research opportunities for new committees; research and make recommendations for members for the JLS Community Advisory Board; place active JLS members on community boards in the greater Sacramento area; and maintain interaction between community programs and JLS Board of Directors and general membership regarding our current programs and status of our signature project.

Impact Sacramento
This committee coordinates “done in a day” (DIAD)  and monthly opportunities for JLS volunteers that are chosen based on community need and the JLS mission statement. Current programs include a clothing drive for Birth & Beyond, March Helping Hands, preparing meals for the residents at St. John’s Shelter and Life skills classes for emancipated youth at the LaVerne Adolfo Center. These programs typically bring members face-to-face with women and children in the community and allow members hands-on volunteer experience.

Kids in the Kitchen

In February of 2006, Junior Leagues from across four countries implemented an international initiative called Junior Leagues'® Kids in the Kitchen, designed to help communities address the urgent issues surrounding childhood obesity and poor nutrition.

In its first year, more than 200 Junior Leagues participated in the program and provided educational initiatives for children and families in their communities. To date, media coverage has reached over 80 million people with messages about the issues surrounding childhood obesity and the Junior League's initiative.

Junior Leagues' Kids in the Kitchen was recently deemed an ongoing awareness initiative for the Association of Junior Leagues International Inc.

The Junior League of Sacramento continues to promote healthy nutrition to Sacramento area families through multiple KITK events each year.   Stay tuned for more information.

Sacramento Children's Museum - Signature Project
This is the current signature project of the Junior League of Sacramento. Formed in 2006, this committee is currently entering our third year of involvement with the Sacramento Children's Museum project.

Our first year focused on assisting with the site selection process, supporting public events, assisting with strategic planning efforts, assisting with exhibit research, and planning and formalizing our relationship and commitment to the museum. At the end of our first year, we re-organized our support structure and have increased our number of committee members to assist with the museum's goal of having a “phase one” site opened within a year. As we begin our 2009-10 year, we look forward to helping the phase one museum take shape and also to coordinate the involvement of all other JLS committees needed to support this effort.

The Sacramento Children’s Museum will focus on activities for children ages 0 to 8 years old. It will provide the Sacramento region with a world-class, play-based environment where childhood is nurtured, respected, and celebrated. The JLS is working closely with the Sacramento Children's Museum to ensure the needs of children-at-risk are remembered and addressed. We are thrilled to be involved with such an important effort.

State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC)
The State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC) is a non-partisan educational and advocacy organization charged with promoting legislation favorable to JLS community projects and focus areas. SPAC celebrated 35 years of advocacy in 2006.

On a larger scale, California SPAC is composed of two delegates from each of the 16 Junior Leagues in the state, representing over 12,000 voting women and nearly 100 community projects in the areas of education, family support, health and violence prevention.

SPAC researches, reviews, and votes to support, sponsor, or oppose legislation which may impact the Junior League mission, purpose and projects throughout the state. SPAC is assisted in selecting project-related legislation by Sacramento Advocacy, an independent legislative consulting and lobbying firm in Sacramento.
