Nourishing Sacramento
Fighting Food Insecurity in Sacramento
The Junior League of Sacramento (JLS) is proud to announce Nourishing Sacramento as our current community impact focus. As an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers, we are stepping up to address one of Sacramento’s most urgent needs.
Why Food Insecurity?
Food insecurity affects thousands of families in our region—and the need is growing. A 2021 study by Valley Vision revealed that 16% of Sacramento residents experience low or very low food security, with 25% relying on food assistance programs. That’s significantly higher than the national average.
Our Community Partners
We are proud to partner with Soil Born Farms and the Yolo County Food Bank and our members have donated hundreds of hours working to alleviate food insecurity in our community by supporting access to food systems and resources while empowering individuals through education to foster a sustainable, nourished Sacramento for all. We are also exploring partnerships with other impactful organizations and food and nutrition programs to broaden our reach and serve diverse populations.
What We’re Doing
Our members are already making an impact through:
- Farm shifts at Soil Born Farms
- Food distribution shifts at local food banks
- Food certification training for volunteers
- Farm-to-Fork Festival
- Partnering with local schools providing support for food drives
Get Involved
The Nourishing Sacramento committee posts shifts every month at both the food bank and farm. All JLS members are welcome to join the effort during these shifts and literally and figuratively, get your hands dirty and make a difference in our community today.
